Let's hope this does better than the "reboot" from 2017

My prediction is that it will be worse than the 2016 movie, but better received, leading to controversy all over again over sexism, racism, and all that lovely stuff.

Are we living in an era that nobody can make something original that will be imprinted to future generations, so they have to resort to nostalgia to make quick cash?

the industry is afraid to invest in new ideas because their is risk for net loss, and franchise money is all what matters now.

In the worst case scenario, more young people will check out the old classics at least.

I'm amazed that any Hollywood studio would even go for making another Ghostbusters movie.

Guess there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I'm sad we won't be getting a sequel to the 2016 movie, I'm gonna miss Holtzman, but I'm game for this.

I just hope they didn't learn entirely the wrong lesson from the 2016 movie and if this is a "Passing the torch" kinda sequel as the hints suggest, that they aren't afraid to diversify the newbies.

People dont give enough credit to Ghostbusters (2016). The old cast already did their job, so to expect them to either do better or to have new faces in similar roles was delusional at best or a gamble with incredible odds stacked against it. This is why something different would help an old franchise to renew itself.
The marketing around it is among the best i've ever witnessed: after decades of false starts and short lived sparks of excitement, production begins after the death of one of its key figures. Then when its unveiled to the public it shows that the premise is the same but the main difference is that being set 30 years after the original, technology was now ever more advanced letting imagination run wild with all kinds of gizmos.

The reception was heavily mixed and in turn making people talk about it all the more, in many cases revisiting the old ones giving even more attention to the franchise as a whole. The affair reached peaks of notoriety when plenty of associates of the brand started to talk about it flinging accusations to any potential customer, and from there on it was a constant back and forth to keep the discussion alive as long as possible. An interesting development then surfaced: apparently Sony (or whoever associated with the production) was meddling on it, with reported actions aimed at deleting any mild comments of disagreement, while keeping and highlighting any of the loud insensitive ones. All of this proved to work efficiently. Truthfully the estimate of people actively engaged in all of this was extremely low, with everyone else as bystanders following the thrill of it.

It's no surprise then that the end product could never hope to match the scope and ambiguity of what came before it. People were exhausted and there wasnt much else to say or think afterwards.

Now that there is a new one, i wonder if it will be capable of offering something to renew itself after what just transpired, and what new tricks will be engineered to make people fall for it again.

Honestly I don't think so. After what happened in 2016, fans of the original are unlikely to trust any new remake or reboot of Ghostbusters.
Fans of the 2016 movie will be pissed that it isn't a sequel to that, and a not-insignificant number of people will probably refuse to see it because "Sony caved to the haters".

It's not completely doomed but they really should've waited another 5-8 years before reviving the franchise.

For all the complaints of "why doesn't Hollywood ever do anything new"...

    They do.

Literally thousands of movies get released every year. (especially if you count foreign films) To say nothing of the sheer quantity of tv shows, live action and animated.

In the next couple weeks we have They Shall Not Grow Old, Mrs. Bala, Escape Room, the Kid Who Would Be King coming out, and no one is talking about them at all, or has even heard of them, and instead we're already dissing on a remake that doesn't come out for two years that we've seen and heard nothing of yet.

We just don't pay any attention to them unless they're known quantities, we don't have the pre-investment unless they're reboots or from creatives we already know. Or in the case of tv shows, it knocks it out of the park and delivers hype immediately. We're focused on Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 and Spiderman and How to Train Your Dragon 3 and Toy Story 4 and remakes of Aladdin and Lion King.

How many people on this forum cared about Molly's Game last year? Absolutely no one. Except me, because I'm a huge fan of the writer, Aaron Sorkin (the West Wing guy). I saw that movie and enjoyed it, and it was a new thing, but it didn't make huge bank or draw any attention to itself. Even though its the same writer that did A Few Good Men and Social Network, that should be a talked about thing... but it ain't.

Then you move over to actually expensive special effects films, where its going to cost 200 million dollars to make, and another 100 million to advertise, and theaters are going to take half the earnings, so it needs to make 600 million just to break even? Yeah, at the point its really rough to put an investment into something wholly new. Something proven with a track record and built in fanbase... has a better shot.

But then you look at how the last Star Trek film did, or the DC universe films that aren't Wonder Woman, or Shrek, and well... even name recognition only goes so far when you have awful films as your most immediate precedent.

Or take a look at this very forum. How many pages of discussion did the Voltron reboot garner over 100 episodes and three years? Five. Even though its a really good solid show... no one in this forum's age bracket has any attachment to it. How much for Bojack Horseman, a well written critically acclaimed thing? Seven. Castlevania? Two.

But how many for Duck Tales? Twenty nine. ANd the first ten pages were before the show even came out!

Those are all threads that were started in early 2015. And are still on the front page of that section. Recognition of a beloved thing is strong, and goes a long way, if its the right thing.

(Steven Universe as a wholly new thing has managed more discussion, but it really hit a chord with this audience. The Avatar thread is hard to judge given its been two different series now.)

Is it possible to have the exact same cast? Murray, Aykroyd etc?

No passing the torch, just them keeping the torch + swallowing the torch at the end of the movie?

Harold Ramis is dead, so no.

Only if you do it entirely in CG and use the video game's story and dialogue.

It's been like 30 years. They're all super old now, and one of them has died. There's really no way to do it as an immediate sequel without super playing up the "too old for this" bit.

Ah, I had a bad feeling about the health of the main cast, sad that one of them actually died. But the others are like 60 something? This is nothing for an actor!

They can do a Ghostbusters that obviously adresses the fact that they are old, but without turning it into a seniors parody.

Bet on how many movies they can release named simply Ghostbusters before the next member of the original's main cast dies.
