Same reason why the English Bulldog has a life expectancy of 5 years, I believe.

--- Update From New Post Merge ---

Meanwhile, Brazil is having their beaches invaded by stains of raw oil that are toxic and the government don't seem to care about it, so the common people have to do the dirty work instead.

In some other little good news, the House did a good thing and illegalized types of animal cruelty. Not all, but it's a good start:

Hey, the Cocker Spaniel is fine!

Of course then we get into the problem of American vs. English Cocker Spaniel. English Cockers have longer snouts that have no problems and are perfectly usable, but American Cockers have shorter snouts which skirt the line of being too short.

They're plagued by chronic health problems stemming from inbreeding to get that distinctive look. Same for bulldogs.

Dalmatians are also largely in the same boat though their health concerns are more skin conditions and mental issues rather than the breathing and mobility problems pugs and bulldogs have.
    Complicating things since 2009.

For the sake of the dogs, actually. They're so inbred to get to the look they have, they are LOADED with health problems. Banning them means less people doing mills, means less of those bad genes being kept around.

Other people in the thread are saying it in a humorous way, but life really is pretty much permanent pain for the breed.

Crossbreed them with something else and in a few generations they might do a bit better with less of the drawbacks but that would take a long term widespread concentrated effort and that's not going to happen.

Tragically, there's a huge influx of them whenever Disney does a new release of 101 and... it tends to go badly.

So, I know the region of the world that used to be called Yugoslavia are responsible for the Dalmatian, but who the hell came up with Pugs?

Pugs go way back to China, along with Pekinese and Shit-zhu. I guess they thought the short face looked cuter, and also more lion-like.

But if you look at old pictures/paintings with pugs in them, their faces weren't as flat. I guess the flat face got more "in vogue" at some point.

Sure. Remove the genetic predisposition to tyroid, adrenal and pretty much every single other endocrine issues you have a decent dog breed.

Also speaking of Dalmatians, I never got the real explanation why firefighters use them.

Aside from helping hunting in general, Dalmatians were known as coach dogs, meaning they ran with the coaches partly as a status symbol and also to help guard the coaches. Then if you go to the first fire engines which were drawn by horses, the dogs would run with them and help keep the horses in check, as they were used to horses. Now they're just mascots. And hey, if you work in a stressful job like fireman, it helps to have a dog in the station for company.

Trump says Islamic State leader Baghdadi dead in U.S. forces raid

Baghdadi killed himself during the raid by detonating a suicide vest, Trump said in a televised address from the White House.

Test results from the aftermath of the raid had positively identified Baghdadi, he said.

“He was a sick and depraved man and now he’s gone,” Trump said.

Trump said “many” of Baghdadi’s people were killed, and added that in killing himself, Baghdadi also killed three children.

U.S. forces suffered no personnel losses, he said. He also thanked Russia, Turkey, Syria and Iraq for their support.

Baghdadi had long been sought by the United States as head of a jihadist group that at one point controlled large areas of Syria and Iraq, where it declared a caliphate. Islamic State has carried out atrocities against religious minorities and attacks on five continents in the name of a version of an ultra-fanatic Islam that horrified mainstream Muslims.

In recent years the group had lost most of its territory.

I wonder if they had to kill innocent people and animals to pull this one off (also assuming they did kill their guy this time).

Seriously, just look at a pug from 200 years ago. Completely different dog!

So couple of updates on this

    * Some hostages (3 children) got killed by Baghdadi.
    * Trump apparently thought it was prudent to not let democrats know about the raid because apparently they're less trustworthy than he himself.
    * Raid was launched from Kurdish controlled territory because who cares about irony.
