But it makes super non-impressive that Colombus was one too.

Ok cool, now why should modern people celebrate him.

Meh, couldn't care less about it, most(if not all) of the stuff we celebrate nowadays are backed up by bloody and nasty stories of human rights violations.

I Suppose Columbus is getting celebrated out of habits.

Yes, right now Columbus is getting celebrated out of habits. But they're habits to break.

To be honest not celebrating Columbus is kind of on the bottom of the totem pole the U.S. (and presumably other countries that celebrate his legacy) should stop doing.

And? I don't see what that has anything to do with treating Columbus like a saint.

    That's what footnotes are for.

Whatever country considers him a saint??

I mean, I don't even know why he would be treated as such, but that's hardly going to change I guess, if you go to Sinaloa, Mexico, you'll find out that Jesús Malverde is considered an actual saint and El Chapo Guzman a hero.
Literal murderers full of cruelty, a saint and a hero. What the actual fuck.

The U.S. had for years prior, albeit in a figurative sense.

I mean, you have people like the COLUMBUS HERITAGE COALITION and the SONS OF ITALY who insist that Columbus is every bit "a man of admiration" and who want people to believe he was "humane". Read it if you want a good laugh on biased advocacy towards Columbus.

Orson Scott Card wrote an entire book celebrating Columbus.

That really should tell you all you need to know.

I really hope you arent saying Latin Americans are apologists to murder here.

    Ugh no.

I'm saying, well. Colonialism with all its perks(chickenpox, murder, abuse) at that point in history was what Thanos would call; inevitable.

Colombus can still get his credit for joining together two worlds.
I mean, you have black people out there holding bills with the pictures of slave owners, its either all of people in history who did bad gets removed or none does.

No reason to overlook their poor belief in basic human rights.

In line with the current discussion, a very interesting statue currently in Times Square will be moving to Richmond, Va:

Why? Because that's where all the other Confederate statues are.

Lots of folks in the old days did bad by modern standards, sure.

Most of them didn't set off genocides.

They shouldn't, but as long as Che Guevara is still a folk hero..

Most didn't stumbled upon new giant continents either.

The others killed as much as they had, of course if theres lots of brand new no-white people, there's lots of slaughters too.

I know I brought up the subject of Leif Eriksson, but did no one else in Europe know Scandinavians had their colonies in Canada and Greenland? Or was it not common knowledge, even when Columbus set sail?
