The Build Up
They called Don Krieg the scourge of the East Blue. Worth a bounty of seventeen million Berries, Krieg was almighty to his men. He seemed insurmountable. And in that aura of cockiness he found his fifty-ship and five thousand man crew shredded after only a week on the Grand Line. He then had the incredibly bad fortune of coming to the oceangoing restaurant Baratie, intending to take it and use it to replace his worthless galleon. What he didn't count on were two people being there: the famed "Red-Leg Zeff" and our hero, Monkey D. Luffy. That was his most dire miscalculation.
Gin was one of Krieg's men, his prized battle commander, and a captive of Lieutenant Fullbody for a few days before breaking out. He was repulsed from the restaurant by Patty, but Sanji met him outside with a plate of food. His words? "Eat." That was the beginning of the war of Baratie.
The Action
Gin guided Krieg to the Baratie and in so doing prompted a plot to overrun it and fly the Jolly Roger on its mast. Krieg revealed his armor and, in meeting Zeff, decided to demand the cook's logbook from his G.L. voyage as an added boon. Zeff fed all of Krieg's men despite this plot, and as the hundreds of pirates began to pour onto Baratie the flagship galleon Krieg had piloted was rent asunder. The one who had ended Krieg's voyage in the Grand Line -- Hawk-Eye Mihawk of the Shichibukai -- had come.
Zoro fought a disastrous battle with that man, but while the pirate lord left Krieg provoked him into tearing his ship into even smaller pieces. The battle then began in earnest. Luffy easily disables a crew of men with a Gomu Gomu Oogama, while Patty and Carne pilot out the Sabagashira #1 (the fishhead of the restaurant) to attack the pirates. They prove moderately successful before being thrown away by Krieg -- and beaten further away by Sanji!
The two then proceed to attack and hold back the pirates, but then Pearl buts in and defeats them. Sanji challenges the shield man to a fight, which ends badly for everyone involved. After a very heartwrenching flashback Sanji stands back up and vows to protect the restaurant, a few blows later prompting Luffy to blast the fin apart. Pearl is unaffected and declares to finish the battle... except that GIN defeated Pearl and called out Sanji for a fight.
When that fight ended with Gin's withdrawal, Krieg brought out his deadly MH5 gas, immobilizing and nearly killing Gin. Luffy was incensed, and so charged to battle. The battle fought between the two decided the war's final victor. Sanji dove into the sea to help a powerless Luffy after having defeated Krieg, while the Don stood defiantly, proclaimed himself the strongest man alive, and got himself gut-punched by Gin. That was the end of the fighting proper.
The Aftermath
After the war, Gin declared that he would meet Luffy again on the Grand Line before leaving in a dinghy with all his men. Sanji then went through his own ordeal outside of battle when his soup was rejected by everyone in a mock display, Zeff included, who in anger didn't lift a foot to him but a hand in a punch. Yosaku burst onto the scene half-eaten by a pandashark, begging for Luffy's aid. Sanji then agreed to leave the restaurant, and so was shown the door by Zeff in a very tearful finale.
