The Man Who Speaks of Dreams

Introduced in the Jaya Arc, Teach appeared to be a man who wasn't going to be a future enemy. He first met Luffy at a cherry pub in Jaya, having disagreements about the food there and competing with each other on who could order the most from the pub (meat for Luffy, cherry pies for Teach). The way they acted was almost a mirror to each other.

Luffy, Zoro, and Nami were ridiculed by the Bellamy Pirates when they sought the Sky Island. Luffy forbade fighting against the crew, allowing themselves to be defeated while Nami dragged them out. A man who heard everything was waiting outside. He believed that the Sky Island existed, and that the pirates nowadays conjuring up what they called "The New Era" was nonsense.

"A man's dream...!!! NEVER ENDS!!!!"

A Candidate

There was a meeting at Mariejoa to discuss conerns about Luffy's bounty. A man named Lafitte appeared to nominate "a certain man" to take Crocodile's place as a Seven Armed Seas.

Blackbeard

Upon arrival at Drum Island, Blackbeard had already plumaged the place in the past. When Wapol ruled the kingdom, he fled like a coward when the Blackbeard Pirates came.

During the Arabasta Arc, we learn that Ace was hunting down a man named Blackbeard. Blackbeard was a part of the Whitebeard Pirates, and killed 4th Squad Commander Satch in order to obtain the one Devil Fruit he saw in his dreams. He spent decades with the greatest crew, believing that it would give him the best chance to find it. With his first desire fulfilled, he fled from the Whitebeard Pirates and formed his own crew. Because mate-killing isn't taken lightly in their crew, Whitebeard sent Ace to chase him down and pay him back for his crime.

Blackbeard's True Nature

As the Luffy Pirates prepare to take off to Sky Island, Teach discovers that Luffy's bounty was indeed 100 million as opposed to the 30 million that wasn't updated. He rounds up his crew, which happened to be composed of many new characters introduced in the arc, including Lafitte. It was that moment when readers discovered Teach's name and identity. They were off to collect Luffy's bounty.

The ship, which mainly appears as a raft created by giant tree logs, sailed to find Luffy while the Knock Up Stream was about to burst. Fortunately for Luffy and the crew, the Knock Up Stream carried the Going Merry up to the sky with a burst of water, while Blackbeard's ship was destroyed. Everyone however, survived regardless.

Yami Yami Fruit

The Yami Yami Fruit which he obtained allowed him to become a being of darkness. His abilities are comparable to the black hole, in which anything within the void of darkness is sucked in, even the abilities of other Devil Fruit users. In otherwords, the darkness can negate their powers, rendering them useless. It has a great effect against Logia types, who are seen to be invincible unless confronted with the weakness of their element. It is unknown if it'll affect the other two types - Paramecia and Zoan - the same way.

Where Is He Now?

The last we see of him is at Banaro Island when Ace finally finds him. Whether or not he survived the last explosion with Ace is still unknown.

Inspiration

Blackbeard, as you may have guessed or known to some degree, was actually a notorious pirate of the 18th century who sailed the Caribbean Seas in what was known as "The Golden Age of Piracy". Marshall D. Teach takes his name from the real Blackbeard's name, Edward Teach. As a One Piece reader, you will discover that the name of another character called Whitebeard is Edward Newgate, and takes his first name from the real Blackbeard's first name.
