Gold Roger
group: Unknown (Pirate)
position: Pirate King
bounty: (chapters ? - 1) ?
skills: He's the Pirate King
Wealth, fame, power: All of this and more had the Pirate King, Gold Roger, the legendary master who tamed the Grand Line -- a feat no other man had, or has, accomplished. By methods unknown Roger was captured and brought to Loguetown, the place of his birth, where he spoke those famous words that sent a shockwave through the very core of the world:
"My treasure? If you want it, you can have it... Look for it! I've put everything in the world there."
Those were Roger's final words, but they seem to have been tantalizing enough that men and women from all around the four Blues and the Grand Line, twenty-two years ago, set sail in search of Roger's treasure. They called it, "One Piece."
Roger's Past
Roger is said to have dominated the Grand Line, but we don't know what his powers were or how he managed it. Only one man is said to have matched his strength, and that would be the man "closest to One Piece," Edward Newgate. Throughout the series the reader is shown glimpses of Roger, be it by those who knew him, those who knew of him, and those who saw him at the eleventh hour.
We all know a certain pirate admires Gold Roger, but as of this writing we don't know what, if any, reason he has other than that he was the Pirate King.
It was mentioned by Dr Kureha that the name, "Gold Roger" was an altered version of his original name, "Gol D. Roger". Although little is known about it, his original name seems to associate him with "The Will of D".
Anime Version
In the filler anime Louge Town, Luffy visited an old bartander which told Luffy that 22 years ago Roger went to that bar. Yet it was not in the manga, Toei invented a story elements that was not suppose to be there, having Roger be a skilled marksman and brilliant statergist. At best, Roger can olny be view through the manga subject.
Also Toei insert a flashback through a 12 years old Smoker's eyes about Roger's excution, yet it was never stated in the manga that Smoker was there at age 12.
