In-Depth Summary
The episode begins with Vivi landing on the floor, prompting Luffy to become furious. As he starts to run at the armed people, Vivi grabs him and holds him back, saying the shot only grazed her arm. She then falls to her knees and says that they will not dock there, but she begs that they summon a doctor. She tells Luffy that he musn't always act rashly, since Nami would be in danger if a fight broke loose. Luffy understands and apologizes to the townspeople, asking them to save his friend. Dalton says that he will lead them to the village, and so he turns to go. The Straw Hats go with Dalton and the townspeople through the snow, and Dalton warns the Straw Hats that their village has a witch. He then mentions that their country does not have a name, causing some confusion for the others. Usopp spots a bear and becomes afraid, but Dalton explains that it is just a Hiking Bear, and tells them to bow to it as they pass. Back on the Going Merry, Zoro decides to start some intensive training by doing some midwinter swimming. Meanwhile, Dalton and the Straw Hats arrive in Bighorn, and Dalton advises the townspeople return to what they were doing, saying that the Straw Hats intend no harm. Usopp and Luffy find what they think is another Hiking Bear, but it turns out to just be a very large woman. At that moment, another townsperson mentoins that an election is coming up soon, and everyone plans on voting for Dalton, but Dalton tells them not to, saying he has too many sins.
Dalton brings the Straw Hats into his house, and he introduces himself as the Captain of the Guard. Dalton tells Vivi that she is familiar. Vivi and Sanji ask about the witch Dalton mentioned, and he tells them to look out the window the mountains. However, their view is blocked by big snow sculptures made by Luffy and Usopp. Dalton explains there is a castle at the top of the mountain, and that is where the witch, the sole doctor of the country, lives. Dalton continues that there is no way to contact the witch, and mentions she has lived for over 140 years. He explains that she comes down from the mountain of her free will, searching for patients to treat. Dalton says that there is a rumor that the witch rides down in a flying sleigh on moonlit nights. Dalton mentions the presence of an abominable snowman, causing Usopp to freak out. Luffy pats Nami awake, telling her that he's going mountain climbing to bring her to the witch doctor. Vivi says that there would be too much stress on Nami for the trek. Nami weakly says that she must get better soon for Vivi, and tells Luffy to take care of her.
As Luffy gets ready to leave, Sanji insists that he is coming along. Vivi ties Nami to Luffy's back so that he won't drop her, for she could die if he did. Dalton warns that the path is inhabited by Lapahn, very dangerous rabbits. Sanji and Luffy say that they'll be fine, and so they rush off up the trail toward the mountain. As Dalton heads back into the house, he asks if anything is wrong with Vivi and Usopp. He decides to sit with them in the snow to await Nami's healthy return. He then explains to Vivi and Usopp that a long time ago, their country did have doctors, but less than a year ago their country was ravaged by a single pirate crew, a crew of only five members. He explains that it was Blackbeard's crew, with unimaginable power. He goes on to say that it may have been for the good of the country, since the monarch had been causing misery for the people. He explains that the country was once called the Drum Kingdom, and the king was Wapol. Vivi and Usopp are shocked, since they recall encountering Wapol on the Going Merry.
Meanwhile, the wind blows harder and it becomes colder as Sanji and Luffy rush up the trail. Luffy goes on to say that people in snow countries never sleep, because they could freeze to death if they did. As they argue over whether this is true or not, several lapahn try to attack them, but are unsuccessful in their attempts. Sanji goes on to say that the women of snow countries have very pale skin because they start to absorb the color of the snowflakes. He then kicks away a very annoying lapahn. Sanji and Luffy continue to run, and they encounter a whole group of massive lapahn. Back at Bighorn, Dalton is surprised that Usopp and Vivi know who Wapol is. Vivi says that when she was a child, she accompanied her father to the Council of Kings, and that is where she saw Wapol first. She says that Wapol called himself a pirate instead of a king. Dalton explains that Wapol is using piracy as a camouflage to hide. He says that when Blackbeard's crew attacked, as soon as Wapol realized how powerful the pirates were, he abandoned the country to its fate. Dalton continues to say that the people have worked on rebuilding the country, but they fear the return of Wapol. Back on the trail, one lapahn leaps at Sanji, and he barely avoids it. Elsewhere, on the sea in his ship, Chess tells Wapol that they have finally returned home. As Usopp, Vivi, and Dalton sit in thought, the episode ends.
