In-Depth Summary

The episode begins with the Going Merry continuing toward Little Garden. Usopp peers through a telescope and says that he can see millions of people of Little Garden waiting to greet him, while Nami calls from inside the cabin for him and Zoro to be quiet. Vivi starts to explain to Nami that there is a danger of coral reefs hitting the hull of the ship. Sanji then comes up to Vivi and Nami, offering them some delicious food. Sanji asks where Luffy is, Nami replying that Luffy is getting her water so that she can take a shower. However, it turns out that Luffy broke the machine that brings up water because he tried to use it too fast, so Usopp says that they have to stop and get some new parts. At that moment, the newspaper delivery arrives, so Nami reads the paper and is shocked by it. When Vivi asks her about it, Nami just flips through the paper. Luffy then looks over at the paper and sees a picture of Coby and Helmeppo in it, now that they are enrolled in the Marines. Nami reads the article stating that Vice Admiral Garp's battleship arrived in Marine Headquarters, and that the picture is from soon after their descent of Reverse Mountain. Luffy is excited, glad that Coby is living his dream.

At the Marine Headquarters, Coby and Helmeppo gape at the tough physical training that the Marine recruits endure. Coby and Helmeppo hide away from the other soldiers, and Helmeppo asks whether the two of them are ready for the HQ or not. Coby gets mad at Helmeppo, since Helmeppo had said he would suprass his father, and that Helmeppo should stay true to that path, just as Luffy stays true to his. Coby orders Helmeppo to fight together with him, when suddenly Garp comes up to them, knocking them out and telling them that there are many people who would be glad to take their place. Coby says that he will accept any orders from Garp, so Garp orders them to get back to work. Meanwhile, back at the old island, some Marine soldiers tell Rika and her mother that Coby and Helmeppo have gone to Marine Headquarters with Garp. Rika gets mad at the soldier, saying how she wanted to talk with Coby and Helmeppo and make them lunch, but she didn't even get to say goodbye. Back at the HQ, Coby and Helmeppo continue to swab the floors, and Helmeppo wonders if they'll become Marine officers like this. They work through the entire day, and at night Helmeppo announces that he wants to quit the Marines and return to his old lifestyle. Helmeppo says that he can only returnt to that lifestyle by ascending to greatness, and so he decides to train. Coby tells him his body can't handle it after the long work day, but Helmeppo replies that he wishes to surpass his father, and he would even die for it. As Helmeppo starts to leave, Coby decides to join him in his training, and so they declare that they will have a contest to see who will achieve his dream first.

Coby and Helmeppo train throughout the night, running laps and doing push-ups, and during the day they work hard doing their chores and enduring beatings from Garp. The scene later shifts to several Marine soldiers examining Luffy's wanted poster, saying that pirates like him must be executed. Coby and Helmeppo overhear this, and Coby mentions that Luffy is his friend, but this freaks Helmeppo out, since no Marine should have a pirate as a friend. They look to see Garp overhearing them, and he asks them about their friend. Later, as the sun is setting, Garp asks Coby and Helmeppo on the beach if they are friends with Luffy. Garp says that they can't just allow friends of pirates to join the Marines. Coby says that he is Luffy's friend but Helmeppo never was, but Helmeppo stops Coby, as they are in it together. Coby and Helmeppo then cast off their shirts and decide to attack Garp, charging right at him. Garp throws off his jacket and swiftly knocks them both out with a punch each. Coby and Helmeppo get back up, taking a swing at Garp's midsection, but Garp sends them both flying. He then walks away, leaving Coby and Helmeppo lying in the sand, but they get back up, yelling that they are not done yet because they aren't dead yet. They declare their dreams, Coby's of becoming a Marine officer and Helmeppo's of surpassing his father, which only makes Garp laugh. Coby and Helmeppo then charge at Garp and strike him in the midsection.

Later, at night, Garp explains that he can see how far Coby and Helmeppo have been pushing themselves physically, but their mentality is still too weak. Coby and Helmeppo are shown lying battered on the ground, and Garp says that he'll make them train even harder. He then tells them to value the memory and he walks away. Coby and Helmeppo stand up and salute him, and so Coby and Helmeppo resume their harsh training. The scene shifts to the Going Merry, showing Nami sneak out of her room with the newspaper, hiding it in a desk. Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp are then shown in their hammocks, Luffy declaring in his sleep that they shall go to Little Garden, and so the episode ends.
