In-Depth Summary
The episode opens with Luffy telling Ryuuji to get up. A Marine soldier tells Nelson that the Sennenryuu is sinking, so Nelson orders them to reel it in with a harpoon. As the harpoon is launched, Luffy catches it in his hand, demanding what Nelson is doing. Nelson tells that Luffy doesn't understand what he's standing on, and that all he wants is the bones so he can acquire the Ryuukotsu elixir. Luffy throws the harpoon back in a rage, which misses Nelson's head by an inch. Luffy yells that Ryuuji is not an object, but an important friend. Nelson orders that Luffy be killed as well. As Ryuuji starts to sink, Luffy reminds it of their goal to reach Dragon's Nest. There is a great rumbling that is even felt at Warship Island. Luffy pulls on Ryuuji's feathers to get him up as the ocean water starts to turn greenish. Nelson yells that the soldiers keep firing, which they proceed to do. Ryuuji suddenly rears its head back and roars, and Luffy realizes that Ryuuji has important nakama of its own. Apis says that Ryyuuji is calling the Sennenryuu scattered across the world.
In the sky, a massive flock of Sennenryuu comes into view. Nelson laughs that there is a whole mountain of Ryuukotsu for him now, but the Sennenryuu surround his ship. Ryuuji roars one last time and collapses into the water, sinking. Luffy turns to Nelson's ship and uses Gomu Gomu no Rocket to grab onto one of the Sennenryuu and launch himself into the sky. He then uses Gomu Gomu no Axe, driving way down past the Sennenryuu and striking Nelson's ship, blowing the entire thing apart. Luffy lands, retracting his leg. The Straw Hats gape in shock at the massive shockwave caused by Luffy's attack, and Nelson sinks into the ocean along with his men. The Marines cry out that Luffy killed their admiral, and they flee for their lives. As Sanji and Zoro decide to leave, Sanji sees that the Sennenryuu are circling. Sanji and Zoro climb back onto the Going Merry, and Luffy launches himself onto it as well, with a landing that rocks the whole ship. Apis runs to see Ryuuji completely sink underwater, and she cries for it.
As Apis cries that she wasn't able to bring Ryuuji to Dragon's Nest, the whole ocean rumbles as the Sennenryuu call out. A large, multitiered rock on a small island rises up out of the sea, and the villagers of Warship Island are shocked at the rumbling of the ocean. Nami realizes that the Sennenryuu are called what they are not because of their life span, but because they come to Dragon's Nest every 1000 years, when it surfaces. The group watches as the Sennenryuu land on the island, and Apis runs off of the ship, running to go see Ryuuji. She calls out to Ryuuji, who lies in the water still. Sanji notes that the rocks that looks like dragons are he Ryuukotsu. Nami says that they are bodies of dragons that became calcified after being underwater for 1000 years. She says that the Dragon's Nest is a sort of graveyard for Sennenryuu, where they come to die. Apis protests the Ryuuji said he would get better when he came, so it can't be a graveyard. Luffy says that Ryuuji was alone for 1000 years until he became friends with Apis, and that his time with Apis was what he treasured the most.
Apis starts to cry, telling Ryuuji to open his eyes since they are at the Dragon's Nest. She refuses to accept that he is dead. Luffy then says that Ryuuji told him that Sennenryuu must return to Dragon's Nest every 1000 years so that they can be reborn. Apis is amazed to see the egg of a Sennenryuu hatch, and a baby Sennenryuu to be inside. Other Sennenryuu flock to the baby to nurture it. Apis then says that the Dragon's Nest isn't just the Dragon's Graveyard, but also the place where they connect to new life. She says she understands why her ancestors built the temple, and she thanks Luffy, saying it is time for them to return to Warship Island. Luffy declares that it's time for them to leave, and as they walk away, Apis looks back to the baby Sennenryuu, noting how wonderful the Dragon's Nest is. The Straw Hats realize that the Ryuukotsu must have just been a legend, since everything is covered in coral. Nelson, lying elsewhere on the island, tries to get up so he can claim the Sennenryuu and their Ryuukotsu for himself, but Erik comes up behind him, sending him flying with a kick. Erik readjusts his hair, standing before the Straw Hats, as the episode draws to a close.
