In-Depth Summary
The episode opens at the crack of dawn as the Going Merry lifts anchor and sets sail once again. Luffy asks Zoro to play tag, who refuses because he thinks its childish. Usopp joins in and soon Zoro ends up chasing the two around. Nami watches from above, remembering when she first joined Luffy and when Luffy defeated Buggy. Sanji then calls the Straw Hats in for their meal. They sit down, and as they are eating Nami asks Luffy what he thinks happened to Buggy. Zoro says that different things happen to different pirates, and as a fight over the food breaks out, the scene shifts to Buggy completing his raft. Buggy, now only his hands, feet, and head together, landed on a remote island after being struck by Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Bazooka, and with his raft complete he can finally leave. He paddles away from the island, being chased by giant fish as he goes. He barely manages to make it to the next island safely. As he steps onto the new island, a bird stares at him, which he yells at. Buggy then remembers how hungry he is, so he dives at the bird, pinning down its wings with his knife and fork by using Bara Bara Cannon. However, another bird calls in a giant blue bird, forcing Buggy to flee in terror.
Buggy devises a trap to catch the giant bird. He puts down a pile of twigs and leaves over a hole, hoping the giant bird will fall for it. The bird tosses the trap away, and when Buggy runs to go catch the giant bird, the bird picks him up, places him on a plate, and so proceeds to eat him. As the bird sticks Buggy into its beak, its spits Buggy out, sending him flying as he yells that he isn't even good enough to eat. The scene shifts to the Going Merry, where Luffy watches a hermit crab crawling along the railing as Buggy flies overhead, complaining how bad things happen to him. Buggy lands in another island, in the middle of a thick forest, and a voice claiming to be the guardian of the forest warns him about the wrath of the gods. It turns out to be the Island of Strange Animals ( Episode 18) and when Buggy steps toward the animals, Gaimon sticks out his gun through a bush and fires at Buggy. The shot goes through Buggy's hat, and Buggy freaks out. Buggy launches his hand into the bush and pulls out Gaimon, and so the two stand off in a forest clearing as Gaimon realizes Buggy has the power of a Devil Fruit.
Buggy's hand returns to his tiny body, and Gaimon warns that he will kill anyone who hunts the animals of the island. The two charge at each other, and Buggy launches his hand to grab Gaimon by the hair. Gaimon takes out his gun, firing at Buggy, who narrowly dodges each bullet and complains that it's cheating. Gaimon replies that Buggy using his hand is cheating as well, so Gaimon takes more shots. Buggy runs and fires his hand, grabbing Gaimon's gunwielding hand. As Gaimon struggles, Buggy leaps into the air and kicks Gaimon down, but Gaimon bites onto Buggy's finger. As Buggy falls back, Gaimon leaps upon him, but Buggy uses Bara Bara Emergency Escape to escape, then lands on top of Gaimon and starts pounding him. Gaimon throws him off and into a tree, and as he stands over Buggy, ready to shoot, Buggy declares that he is not a poacher but a pirate. Gaimon says that he was a pirate, too, and so the two become fast friends.
That evening, Gaimon and Buggy drink together as the animals of the island celebrate, and Gaimon says how awesome of a pirate Buggy is. Gaimon then explains what happened 20 years ago and how he got stuck on the island. Buggy asks Gaimon to become one of his nakama after he regains his crew, but Gaimon replies that he must stay and guard the animals. He mentions how a kid once asked him to join his crew, which reminds Buggy of when he was defeated by Luffy. The next morning, Buggy is ready to set sail on his raft again, and he shakes hands with Gaimon, saying his farewells. As he sails off, a giant crab emerges from the sea, snapping apart his raft with its claw. Buggy clutches to a piece of wood as a cannonball is shock through the crab's head, causing it to sink. The cannonball came from Alvida's boat, which sails up to Buggy. Alvida picks Buggy out of the water and explains that she is looking for a certain person. She shows Buggy Luffy's wanted poster, causing Buggy to become furious. As they share a hatred for Luffy, Buggy and Alvida join forces and clink their bottles together as they drink to their new alliance.
On the Going Merry, Usopp, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji argue as their trying to get to sleep. Nami hears them from the next room, looking over at a picture of Bellemere. The hermit crab from before then falls into the water as the episode ends.
Mumbo230’s Notes
This episode and the next are based on the "The Buggy Crew's Adventure" side story that occurred on the cover pages of Chapters 35 - 75. The only other side story to be animated was "The Diary of Coby-Meppo's Harsh Struggle." Toei stopped animating the side stories due to their relatively low ratings.
