Episode 32: The Witch of Cocoyashi Village, Arlong's Female Officer

Short Summary

As Luffy, Yosaku, and Sanji draw closer to Arlong Park, they encounter a beast from the Grand Line named Mohmoo. At Arlong Park, Zoro jumps into the water but Nami saves him, and he is imprisoned. Usopp learns from Nojiko that she is Nami's adopted sister. Arlong goes to Cocoyashi Village and bullies the villagers, but Usopp stands up against Arlong. Nami then returns to Cocoyashi Village and meets with Nojiko again.

In-Depth Summary

The episode opens with Luffy and Yosaku fighting over a piece of meat aboard their boat. As they argue, Sanji notices that something large is underneath them. The giant monster Mohmoo emerges in front of them, eyeing their meals. Luffy uses Gomu Gomu no Pistol to knock it back, yelling at it to not take his food, but Mohmoo gets back up. Sanji takes a plate of food and holds it out for Mohmoo, but as Mohmoo leans in to eat it, he delivers a harsh kick right under Mohmoo's jaw. Sanji explains that Mohmoo was going to eat him, too, and as Mohmoo gets back up, Sanji uses Collier Shoot to knock it out for good. Meanwhile, Usopp awakens to find himself in a strange house that he does not recognize. At the table sit Nojiko and the boy from Gosa Village, and the boy explains how a witch blocked him from going into Arlong Park. He claims how Arlong killed his father and he'll have revenge, even if it means dying. Nojiko replies dryly, saying that she hates people who die for things because she knows someone who lives a life worse than death. She explains that she is the adopted sister of Nami, to Usopp's shock, and that their mother is dead. She also explains that Nami was only pretending to be a nakama for Arlong. Usopp becomes angry, recalling how Nami pretended to help him defend Syrup Village and have fun on the ship, and this piques Nojiko's interest.

Back in Arlong Park, Arlong laughs at Zoro for thinking that Nami was still his friend. Zoro says that he expected it all along, and that he wouldn't be surprised if Nami was a murderer. He then kicks off into the water, still bound, and everyone stands around, wondering what Zoro is trying to do. Nami cracks under the pressure, and she dives into the water, pulling Zoro out. She demands what Zoro is doing, but Zoro asks her the same question. Nami furiously pounds Zoro, striking his wound and causing him to fall. The mermen then take him away, and he is imprisoned. A merman then arrives and tells Arlong that he was chasing a long-nosed guy, but he escaped, and says he fled to Cocoyashi Village. Arlong decides to check it out.

Later, in Cocoyashi Village, the villagers start exclaiming that Arlong is coming. Arlong arrives with his band of mermen, having heard that someone was bearing a weapon in the village. Arlong steps up to Genzo, picking him up by the throat and saying that weapons lead to rebellion. The villagers reply that they would never think of rebelling, as they have been paying their tributes for eight years already. Usopp and Nojiko watch from behind a pair of buildings, and Nojiko explains that Arlong makes all humans pay tributes to him just so they can stay alive. As this happens, Nami is shown opening the door to the place Zoro is being held. Meanwhile, Arlong prattles on about raising an Arlong Empire that will span all of East Blue, and this shocks and horrifies everyone. Arlong throws down Genzo, but before the villagers can react Genzo tells them not to attack - they will win through patience. Arlong picks up Genzo with one hand and laughs about being superior to humans, and just as he is about to throw down Genzo he is struck from behind by a star from Usopp's slingshot. Everyone turns to see Usopp standing on top of a building, declaring himself as King Usopp and that people believe he came from hell. The merman from before points him out as the guy he couldn't capture.

Arlong becomes furious and grabs the corner of the building Usopp is standing on, tossing it over. He yells how he'll destroy the village of not everyone pays up, but the other mermen hold him back. They decide to leave, but Kurobi tells the villagers that they will be back. As they leave, Genzo blames himself, but the villagers tell him not to. They wonder where Usopp went, and Usopp is fleeing from the village like mad. Nami then walks into the village, and everyone returns to their homes. Nojiko greets her, saying it is unusual for Nami to take the main road. Nami and Nojiko then visit a grave overlooking the sea, and Nami says she only has seven million berries left to go before reaching her goal of one hundred million. Meanwhile, at Arlong Park, Zoro had knocked out all of the mermen and now sits upon Arlong's chair, wondering about Nami. On the water, a battered Mohmoo pulls along Luffy, Sanji, and Yosaku's ship, as they draw closer to Arlong Park and the episode ends.

Usopp really shines in this episode. We are introduced to Genzo (take note of the windmill on his hat).
