Pre-intro

In the warehouse underneath the bridge, Franky, Mozu and Kiwi wails at Usopp's story about leaving the crew because of the ship. Usopp thought that telling them the Straw Hats were no longer his companions may shut them up. Franky lifts his head up, and brings out his guitar to sing about Usopp's harshness. The sisters cheer Franky on but Usopp thinks they're just making fun of him.

Zanbai cries out into the night for Franky as he tries to flee from Lucci, but he is quickly taken out.

More tea is made and Usopp is now more willing to take some when he's finished. Franky shatters Usopp's plan to return home by telling him that Going Merry is done for and will render any chance of returning to East Blue impossble. Usopp finds himself having to fight Franky to defend Going Merry's existence. Franky grabs the side of Merry and rips a large piece from it right before Usopp's eyes.

Post-intro

Usopp fires at Franky but both are blown back. Franky gets a hold of Usopp and hits him deep below the water where he can see the truth. Merry's keel was truly broken, and Usopp could do nothing but weep and accept it.

Usopp returns to the surface and slowly paces himself to retrieve Merry's broken piece. Usopp struggles to drag it along the floor to patch Merry up. Unwilling to part with Merry, he continues to hammer nails in.

With a burst of anger, Usopp yells at Franky and falls down to his knees. He confesses about knowing beforehand of Merry's condition.

He thinks about the night that seemed like a dream, a night of fantasy that was uncomprehensible. Within the misty forest of Skypiea's Upper Yard, someone was using a hammer on Merry's wood. No one could've been there, yet there was someone beside Merry. The next morning, the ship was repaired, not perfectly, but enough to allow Merry to sail one more time. This person knew Merry's original structure because its Flying Model was removed. That night, Usopp thought it might have been his imagination, but he also heard some words in his heart. A voice reached out to him and told him that the ship will carry them one more time.

Putting the pieces together, Usopp believed that it must've been Merry's incarnation. Franky by no means had to believe him since the story already seemed like it came from a children's book.

Franky knows of this story. Usopp that night saw Klabautermann, a fairy with the appearance of a sailor that held a hammer in its hands. It was only present on ships that had been dearly cared for. Like Usopp said, it was an incarnation of the ship. As the legends say, it warns the sailors whenever the ship is in danger.

The crew's care and love for the ship was what made Merry able to reach Water 7. There was so much love that its incarnation even appeared in human form. Usopp is very touched by this.

Someone's ringing the doorbell. Assuming that it was Zanbai and the others (they were the only ones who knew of the warehouse), Mozu and Kiwi go to open the door even if it did seem strange that Zanbai didn't come through the upper entrance.

Through some arguments, it looks as if Usopp and Franky were going to have another go at each other. Franky wants to defend the ship by putting it to rest, while Usopp wants to defend the ship by keeping it alive.

One of the girls gets knocked back. When the boys look to see what was happening, Kiwi gets knocked down by Kalifa. CP9, or the Galley-La foremen as Franky knew them, have arrived.
