Episode 143: And Then the Legend Begins! To the End of the Rainbow
The Collection Police loot all treasure in sight and return it to Ruluka via the Rainbow Tower. The Pumpkin Pirates (including Henzo) fight back, but Reik shocks Henzo. After a short discussion about Reik, Zoro challenges him. On the outside, Sanji and Chopper muse idly for a bit before deciding to enter the Mist. Luffy rockets through the Tower to get into the Mist and knocks down Whetton, who tried to charge him a tax for entering and failed. Various reunions and introductions take place. Whetton forces Lapanui into the water and yaps about his mayoral duties, but when he badmouths pirates, Luffy tosses and berates him.
Meanwhile, Zoro, who is battling Reik, threatens to cut the electricity and Robin does just that by disconnecting the suit. Reik plunges into the sea. Luffy then talks of his dream to become the Pirate King. At that, Whetton launches him into the water (along with Phillip) and sets the Tower entryway ablaze. This causes a huge explosion which causes the Tower to break, severing the link between the Mist and Ruluka. Ian disowns Whetton for abandoning him, and Lapanui rescues Luffy. The explosion, however, caused a spatial distortion that led to a vacuum rift. The rift causes a tear in the Mist, and Lapanui spots the outside sunset that shines through the tear. He then recognizes the light as the same one he and Luffy ran towards when they escaped the Mist. Both friend and foe work together on the Going Merry to escape the Mist, but one of the oars breaks. Nami realizes they need a wind, and Lapanui swims off to blow up his ship to generate the wind.
In Ruluka, Whetton revels in his treasure, but Chopper and Sanji show up to kick his butt, but Whetton runs. Meanwhile, as Lapanui jumps, the kids follow him. Henzo pleads for them not to throw away their lives, but Isoka promises they'll return to Ruluka someday. In Ruluka, Whetton tries taxing Sanji and Chopper, but they refuse. Unfortunately, the Mist is fading fast, and Whetton taunts them. At that moment, the ship explodes, and the Going Merry is sent flying out of the Mist over the town into the sea. The Mist over the town proceeds to suck Whetton's mansion off the ground into the Mist, which then vanishes.
The crew is reunited, but Nami is ticked off at the treasure loss. After that, the Marines show up, and Phillip runs to Major Pasqua for help, but Pasqua spots a stolen jewel on his hand and arrests him for it. The rest of the treasure is found, and Pasqua confiscates it all. Whetton attacks Pasqua, but Pasqua flicks Whetton just as Lapanui did. Henzo then realizes Pasqua is Lapanui and the Marine crew are his childhood friends. Lapanui's explosion threw them out of the Mist as well, but it did so 50 years ago, and in that time, Lapanui and company became powerful Marines. Through all of it, though, Lapanui still calls himself a Pumpkin Pirate and Henzo's friend. Luffy and company sail off, and the townsfolk finally acknowledge Henzo's research. The scene shows the children's rescue after escaping the Mist; moreover, Lapanui was the author of the Rainbow Mist books.
